For the better part of two years, AI lived in browser tabs. You opened ChatGPT, asked a question, got an answer, and closed the tab. AI was a destination. You went to it.
That era is ending. Fast.

OpenAI's advantage is its massive user base and brand recognition. Hundreds of millions of people already use ChatGPT. If OpenAI can convert even a fraction of those users into agent users, it creates a powerful lock-in effect.
The risk for OpenAI is that it remains a layer on top of other companies' operating systems. Apple and Google control the actual OS. If they decide to build their own agent layers, OpenAI could be squeezed out.
Google's Advantage: OS Integration
Google has something OpenAI and Anthropic do not: operating systems. Android runs on over three billion devices. ChromeOS dominates education and enterprise lightweight computing. Chrome has over 60 percent browser market share.
Google is weaving Gemini into all of them. Not as a separate app, but as a system-level capability. Gemini can already read your Gmail, check your Calendar, access your Drive files, and control Android devices.
This integration is Google's moat. No other AI company has this level of system access. OpenAI can build a great agent, but it will always run on top of someone else's OS. Google's agent runs inside the OS itself.
The risk for Google is the same as it has always been: the innovator's dilemma. Google's core business is search advertising. Agents that complete tasks autonomously bypass search entirely. If Google's agent is too good, it cannibalizes Google's revenue.
Anthropic's Play: Safety as Differentiation
Anthropic is taking a different approach. Its computer use feature, which allows Claude to interact with desktop applications by seeing the screen and controlling the mouse, is the most ambitious agent capability publicly available.
Anthropic's positioning is safety and reliability. While OpenAI moves fast and Google leverages its distribution, Anthropic argues that agents need to be trustworthy before they can be widely deployed. Claude's constitutional AI approach, which bakes safety constraints into the model itself, is the foundation.
Whether safety is a compelling enough differentiator to win market share remains to be seen. Enterprise customers certainly care about it. But consumers tend to prioritize capability over safety, and Anthropic will need to compete on both.
The App Developer Dilemma
For application developers, the agent OS wars create a profound strategic challenge.
If agents become the primary way users interact with software, then applications become backends. Users do not open your CRM to update a record. They tell their agent to do it, and the agent interacts with your CRM's API.
This means applications need to expose their functionality to agents. They need agent-friendly APIs, clear documentation, and structured data that agents can understand. Applications that do not adapt will be bypassed.
But exposing your application to agents also means giving up control of the user interface. If the agent is the front end, your application becomes infrastructure. The value shifts from the interface to the data and the API.
This is the same dynamic that played out with mobile. Apps that were just wrappers around websites died. Apps that offered unique functionality and data thrived. The same will happen with agents. Applications that offer unique value to agents will survive. Those that are just UI shells will not.
Enterprise Adoption: The Real Test
The consumer market for agents is exciting but uncertain. The enterprise market is where the money is.
Enterprises have clear, repeatable workflows that are perfect for agents. Invoice processing, report generation, data entry, customer support, meeting scheduling, document review. These tasks consume millions of human hours per day. Agents can do them faster, cheaper, and often more accurately.
The companies that win the enterprise agent market will be the ones that solve three problems: security, integration, and reliability. Enterprises need agents that can access their data without leaking it. They need agents that integrate with their existing tools. And they need agents that do not hallucinate or make mistakes on critical tasks.
No company has solved all three yet. But the race is on.
The Inflection Point
We are at an inflection point. The next twelve months will determine which companies control the agent layer for the next decade.
OpenAI has the momentum and the user base. Google has the OS integration. Anthropic has the technology and the safety credentials. Apple is lurking, as always, with the hardware and the privacy positioning.
The agent OS wars will reshape the technology landscape more profoundly than the browser wars of the 1990s or the mobile wars of the 2010s. Because whoever controls the agent layer does not just control a piece of software. They control how humans interact with computers.
